Volcanoes of the Bolivian Andes - Acotango, Pomerape, Parinacota
Acotango (6,052 masl) is a very accessible mountain. Set in a desert environment where the smell of sulfur is easily detected, the ascent allows you to observe the yellowish crystals of this mineral, along with the elegant and immense volcanic pyramids within Sajama National Park. At the beginning of the season, conditions are often excellent for skiing. Sajama National Park is renowned for its wide plateau area, high Andean lagoons, and incredible volcanic mountains such as Payachatas, Parinacota (6,332 masl), Pomerape (6,280 masl), and Sajama (6,542 masl), the highest mountain in Bolivia. These are the most beautiful volcanoes in the Bolivian Andes. The area borders the department of La Paz and the Chilean border, with altitudes ranging from 4,000 to 6,542 meters. You can experience diversified flora and fauna: queñuales forests (trees that grow at the highest altitudes of the Altiplano), elegant vicuñas, llamas, alpacas, suris, Andean wild cats, pumas, and condors. In addition to this, there is a chain of geysers where you can observe boiling water erupting from the ground and open-air hot springs, both products of the underground volcanic activity of the Bolivian Andes.
